Before you gather requirements, you need to know who decides, who does the work and who reports to whom. Learn how to draw a simple org chart in Visio and use it as a stakeholder map for your project.

Step by step

Intro

  1. Org chart = stakeholder map. Before you gather requirements, you need to know who decides and who does the work. A quick org chart in Visio shows you exactly that.

Intro

  1. Basic Org Chart stencil. I'm using the Basic Org Chart shapes.

The sponsor

  1. The sponsor. Start at the top with the project sponsor, using the Executive shape. Type the name, then the role.

The managers

  1. The managers. Under the sponsor, the managers. The product owner decides what gets built. The IT manager owns the systems. And the operations manager runs the process day to day.

Reporting lines

  1. Who reports to whom. Now the reporting lines. Connect the sponsor to each manager. Visio draws the classic org chart line, down and across. And the third.

The team

  1. The people who do the work. Add the people who do the work. The team lead in operations knows how things really happen. Connect them to their manager. And the developer in the IT team. Connect.
  2. Done. Click away to see the whole map.

Use it for stakeholders

  1. Use it for stakeholders. Now use it. The top tells you who signs off. The bottom tells you who to interview about how the work is really done. Don't skip either level.
