How to Show a Decision With 3 Outcomes in a Visio Flowchart
Not every decision is yes or no. Learn how to draw a flowchart decision with three outcomes in Visio, label every path and bring them back to one end, with an IT support ticket triage process.
Step by step
- way decision. Most flowchart decisions are yes or no. But sometimes there are three answers, like high, medium or low. Here's how to draw that cleanly in Visio, with an IT support ticket.
- Basic Flowchart Shapes. I'm using the Basic Flowchart Shapes stencil.
- Start. The process starts when a user logs a ticket.
- The decision. The decision asks one question with clear answers. What's the priority? Connect the start to it.
- One path per answer. High priority means the support team calls the user straight away. Put it on the left.
- Label every path. Connect it, and label the line high.
- One path per answer. Medium goes straight down. Fix it within one working day.
- Label every path. Connect it and label it medium.
- One path per answer. Low priority goes on the right. It's added to the backlog.
- Label every path. Connect it and label it low.
- One end. All three paths finish in the same place. Add one end shape at the bottom. Connect the high path to it. The medium path. And the low path.
- Done. Click away to see the finished flow.
- The rule. So, one question in the diamond, one path for every possible answer, and a label on every line that leaves it. If the answers overlap, split it into two decisions.
