Comments and Mentions in Jira (Get Answers Faster)

Ask your question on the Jira work item itself: open the comment box, at mention the person who knows, and ask one clear question with a reason. The answer stays with the story, not in someone's inbox.

Step by step

Why comment

  1. Comments and mentions. A question sent by email gets lost, and the team never sees the answer. In Jira, you ask it on the work item, and mention the person who knows. Let me show you.

The story

  1. Create a story. Say the shop is adding gift cards, and you have a question for the product owner. First, the story. Click create. Click the work type, and pick story, the green bookmark. Type the summary. Pay with a gift card. Click create.
  2. Open it. It lands at the bottom of the backlog. Click it, and it opens on the right.

Ask the question

  1. The comment box. Under activity is the comment box. Everyone who opens this story sees what you write here. A quick tip. Press the letter M, and the box opens, ready for typing.
  2. Mention the person. Start with the person. Type the at sign and the start of a name. Jira lists the people who match. On a real team, you pick the product owner. This demo site has only one person, me, so I pick Prince. The name turns into a blue mention.
  3. One clear question. Then ask one clear question, and say why you need the answer. Can a gift card be used with a discount code? We need it for the checkout rules. Click save.
  4. They get told. The comment sits on the story, with the mention in blue. The person you mention gets an email and a notification, with a link straight back here.

Recap

  1. Ask on the work item. So, open the work item and press M. Type the at sign and pick the person. Ask one clear question, with a reason. The answer stays with the story, where the whole team can find it.
