How to Get Jira and Confluence for FREE (Atlassian Free Plan Setup)
Jira and Confluence are free for up to 10 users. See what the Atlassian Free plan includes, how to sign up step by step, and a first look at a brand new Jira and Confluence site.
Step by step
The Free plan
- Jira + Confluence for free. Jira and Confluence are the tools most business analysts use every day, and you can get both for free. Here is what the Free plan includes and how to sign up.
- The Free plan. On Jira's pricing page, the Free plan is free forever for up to 10 users. That is enough for practice or a small team.
- 10 users, 2 GB. You get 2 GB of file storage, plus boards, backlogs and reports.
- Get it now. To start, click Get it now under the Free plan.
- No credit card. Atlassian only asks for your email. No credit card is needed.
- Your email. Type your email address. Any email works. It doesn't have to be a work one.
- Sign up. Then click Sign up.
- Check your email. Atlassian emails you a 6-digit code. Type it in, then add your name and a password.
- Pick a site name. Next, pick a site name. It becomes your own web address. Here the site name is princetheba, so the site is princetheba.atlassian.net.
Your Jira
- Your new Jira. Your new Jira site is ready to use. It opens on the For you page, which is your personal start page.
- Create. The Create button is where every new task, story or bug starts.
- Your space. During setup, Atlassian asks you to name your first space. Here it is called Online Shop, and that is where the demo project lives.
Add Confluence
- Add Confluence. You add Confluence the same way. Open the app switcher, pick Confluence and choose the Free plan. It joins the same site.
- Your Confluence. Confluence opens at princetheba.atlassian.net/wiki/home. This is where requirements, meeting notes and decisions live.
- Create a page. Click Create to start your first page. Jira tracks the work, and Confluence holds the knowledge.
Recap
- Free for 10 users. In short: free for 10 users, 2 GB of storage, no credit card. Sign up with your email, verify it, pick a site name, then add Confluence from the app switcher.
Common mistakes
- Clicking a paid plan's button. Start from Get it now under the Free plan. That route only asks for your email and needs no credit card.
- Signing up for Confluence again from scratch. A fresh sign-up can leave you with a second, separate site. Add Confluence from the app switcher on the site you already have, so it joins the same site.
- Picking a site name in a rush. The site name becomes the web address everyone uses, like princetheba.atlassian.net. Choose a short name you are happy to share with a team.
- Inviting more than 10 people. The Free plan covers up to 10 users. A bigger team needs a paid plan, so keep the free site for practice or a small team.
When a business analyst uses this
Before starting on a new project, a business analyst can set up a free site to practise the real workflow. For example, log the user stories for an Online Shop space in Jira, and keep the workshop notes and sign-off decisions on a Confluence page on the same site.
